After a few get-togethers before a movie, after a movie, before a show, after a show, and every other occasion where a person could peacefully have a drink, a problem emerged. Someone had to drive home.
We reached a very mature and responsible conclusion. Since life throws so many restrictions our way, we simply needed to change the rules of the game. We decided to host a barbecue get-together with a sleepover at my place.
A solution brilliant in its simplicity. No one has to draw the short straw. No one has to nervously glance at their watch. Or perform complex calculations like “how much can I drink and still drive in the morning.”
The car can quietly spend the night in the parking lot and think about its behavior.
The grill was obviously meant to serve a culinary function. But it quickly turned out its social significance was much greater.
It became the center of events, a place to bond, a command center, and a machine for producing sausages under combat conditions. You could just sit around it, grab a bite, and have a drink. You could also engage in incredibly important discussions about life, the weather, food, and other matters that suddenly take on enormous meaning in such circumstances.
Poland vs. Bulgaria — a match by the grill
The date of our get-together perfectly coincided with a major sports event. We put on the match of our wonderful volleyball players against Bulgaria.
It was the first match of the Polish national team in the group stage of the 2022 World Championship. The atmosphere became even more patriotic, sporty, and thrilling.
Every point for Poland tasted almost as good as the next serving from the grill. Fortunately, our volleyball players didn’t intend to drag out the suspense and dealt with Bulgaria in beautiful style. They won 3:0.
Three sets, zero unnecessary stress, and a score that perfectly fit the whole concept of the evening. Poland won, the grill was working, and our accommodation was sorted. The drivers could finally stash their keys in a safe place and enjoy the get-together like normal people.
Jacek’s birthday cake
As if all that wasn’t enough, it turned out Jacek had a birthday coming up soon. And when a guy has a birthday, it’s a known fact you can’t let him go through life without a cake.
Another piece of pastry art appeared on the table. This time it wasn’t just a dessert, but official proof that we had planned the evening right. Besides volleyball, a barbecue, and a sleepover, we now had another reason to celebrate.
