Waldek Is Getting Married

Waldek się żeni – Julinek

On October 2, 2010, the impossible finally happened, something even the oldest highlanders no longer believed in… Waldek got married.

That day marked the end of months of preparations, overthinking, and endless logistics. There were about 300 people at the wedding. The weather was beautiful. And that’s not exactly a given at the beginning of October.

The Ceremony

The priest did not disappoint. The faces he made when the choir sang too long or the violinist dragged things out were indescribable. You just had to see it.

After the whole ceremony, I found out I had been “spun” toward my wife (a wedding superstition giving her the upper hand). Honestly, if I had known what was going on and actually cared, I could have spun a few circles in my own direction. As they say, “ignorance of the law is no excuse.”

Well-Wishes and the Ride

After the wedding, it was time for the well-wishes, which lasted forever. On the bright side, we have enough wine to last us two to three years 🙂 After the greetings, we got into a car—an Audi A8. In Leszno, we switched to a horse-drawn carriage. The carriage turned out to be a huge hit. All the guests—except for a handful who were in on the secret—were surprised. Some were in downright shock when the carriage dropped us off at the reception hall.

The Reception Hall and First Dance

There were 208 guests at the hall. You could feel it best right after the first dance when most of them stayed on the dance floor.

As for the first dance, also known as the performance—I think we pulled it off. Its final version was actually being created on the fly as we danced. It was our first time dancing in that hall 😛

I had figured out the best place to stand so we’d have enough room for our routine. But something always comes up. If we had bravely followed the steps from memory, we would have collided with the guests. They formed two circles around the room, shrinking its size. After the initial steps—total improvisation.

Fortunately, the honorable jury went easy on us. Just like the judges with the strongman Mariusz Pudzianowski on Dancing with the Stars.

The band delivered. This is especially important because they’re playing at Edytka and Michał’s wedding in May 2011. There were no crazy excesses at the wedding reception. The food was delicious, warm, and on time.

Poprawiny (The After-Party)

About half the guests made it to the poprawiny (the traditional next-day party). So around a hundred people rolled through.

The best man, Tomek, had it the worst. He was already sick on the wedding day, though he didn’t show it at all. By Sunday, it completely knocked him out. He was really brave.
