In almost total secrecy (we only let Kasia in on the secret at the very last minute, so she wouldn’t accidentally drag Monika out on the town), Tomek and I set off for Mrzeżyno to visit her at summer camp. The plan was simple: leave at 2:00 AM, full conspiracy, and the element of surprise. As usual, everything was going perfectly… until we came up with the brilliant idea of getting a kebab on Marszałkowska Street that evening. That very kebab decided to become the main character of the trip.
My body decided it would be best to get rid of its contents through all possible exits simultaneously. For a moment, it looked like the biggest surprise would be my visit to the ER, not the reunion with Monika. Fortunately, the prospect of seeing the sea for the first time in my life proved stronger than the stomach revolution. Tomek managed to find… a legendary, old Russian equivalent of Imodium – a concoction that probably remembered the Cold War. It worked like a plug in a leaky pipe, and we managed to get the situation under control.
After over eight hours of driving, we made it. The surprise was a success, Monika was shocked, and Tomek could finally have his symbolic wedding to the sea. I, on the other hand, took away a valuable life lesson from this expedition: before an eight-hour road trip, it’s better not to experiment with a kebab. Especially one that apparently has its own travel plans.
